When one thinks of oil paintings, the relatively regal form of art conjures notions of stern practice, but the works of artist Allison Schulnik take an approach that’s far more relaxed. With a certain melancholy that’s hard to mistake, Schulnik’s work breathes life into the scenes that is depicts.
A cat hissing and some wilting flowers are amongst my personal favorites for the way they are beautifully made; rather than painted, the pieces appear to be more so sculpted and smeared onto the canvas. This kind of practice with oil paint on behalf of Schulnik is almost like a modern form of impressionism because of the way it imitates life, but in an even more relaxed manner. One can get a definite sense of texture that is strikingly hard to ignore that makes you want to reach out and feel the contours.
