Anu Tuominen Gives a Kitchen Staple a Second Lease on Life

Artist Anu Tuominen takes the ordinary pot holder and turns it into some bigger than itself. In this case, she has collected a used and neglected kitchen object to create a vibrant wall display that looms before its audience. By doing so, she has given them a second lease on life—this time as conceptual art.

Based in Helsinki, Finland, Anu Tuominen shows the kind of beauty that is present in what other people might consider trash. By reinterpreting pot holders as art, she writes poetically, “Everything is still as it was, and yet somehow more meaningful than before.” What has often been considered a practical and intimate object of the home has been transformed into a public art piece that is an “endless array of parallels, analogies, continuums and hierarchies,” as observed by Ostso Kantokorpi.
