Painting and still life imagery is always up for interpretation by the viewer. In Amy Bennett’s new ‘Lakefront Series,’ the feeling stretches beyond interpretation into an area of familiarity.

Bennett’s peculiar style of creating miniature dioramas and then painting them as still life images has created a genre unlike any other. It branches out into the lives of those who see her paintings.

Bennett’s ‘Lakefront Series’ encompasses a trip out to a cottage with family and friends. The paintings, however, give any viewer the feeling that they have been on the same trip or could go on a similar one. Bennett was quoted in her artist’s statement saying she hopes “the collective images suggest a known past that is just beyond reach.”

The activities in the series show people building shelter in case of unfavorable weather, enjoying a canoe adventure on open water or simply relaxing on the sand at the lakefront.

Bennett’s ability to bring this feeling through personally fabricated images adds a remarkable element to the series. Amy Bennett’s next show will showcase a new Lakefront Series in November of this year at the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo.
