The otherworldly wood sculptures of Ben Butler, an artist and assistant professor living and working in Memphis, Tennessee and Quogue, New York, will drudge up images of sci-fi films and ideas of what the landscape of alien worlds would look like. The already natural material takes on abstract organic forms that look as though they belong on another planet, hence the alien references.
Working predominantly with small pieces of lumber, Butler is able to achieve great levels of detail with his otherworldly wood sculptures. Whether creating twisted forms or coral reef-like structures, the art pieces are breathtaking and slightly surreal. One of his original works, which had made headlines back in 2011, even looked as though it was melting.
