The Body of Skin Project Makes Furniture that Resembles Human Skin
Vasiliki Marapas — July 23, 2014 — Art & Design
Studio 9191's Gigi Barker was curious to see how people would react to her 'A Body of Skin' project. The collection of furniture is designed to simulate the feeling of human skin; it has been saturated with pheromones and aftershave to increase familiarity.
The seats use a molded silicone base to mimic the appearance of fat rolls. Leather is stretched over the base, imitating the look of human skin, with the suede side facing up. Barker explains, "I wanted to create shapes that were not instantly recognizable as chairs. That made the viewers question how to interact with the shapes and to form their own conclusions."
From the sculptural shapes to the molded leather, all the pieces are handmade by Barker herself.
