Spiral Film Reel Portraits

'The Unseen Seen' is a Photo Project Depicting Reels of Famous Movies

— May 26, 2014 — Art & Design
'The Unseen Seen' is a curious and captivating cinematic portraiture project that involves depicting circular film reels of the movies themselves, rather than depicting particular scenes, frames or compilations thereof. The project is the work of Austrian photographer Reiner Riedler.

Riedler began by compiling a list of popular films as well as films with weird or unusual titles. He backlit each roll of film by installing film lights behind them, lighting each roll the exact same way, and captured images of them.

The resulting photographs depict films as physical, tangible works of art. Each film reel consists of thousands of compressed photos. What's most incredible is that each circular reel somehow manages to capture the feel and characteristics of the film.

The best example of this is likely the reel representing The Godfather, with its brown, dark beige and black spirals somehow perfectly capturing the movie's central concepts.
