'The Last People of the Pit' is a collection of images captured by photographer Sorin Vidis, who wanted to show the remnants of political and social upheaval and strife in Romania. The photos were captured in the outskirts of the Romanian capital Bucharest, in a site where a 17th century monastery stood alongside grand houses. The structures were demolished by the dictator Ceausescu in the 1980s with the aim of building an artificial lake.
The project never saw the light of the day, so the empty site has become home to the impoverished, who dwell in improvised huts and crumbling structures in the once grand site.
In recent years, young people have been living the impoverished area to find a better life in Bucharest and other urban centers. This prompted Vidis to take photographs of a community whose numbers are fast dwindling.
