The OpenKnit Printer proves that other materials other than plastics and resins can be produced using 3D printing technology. First it was the 3D printed metal bike frame and now it is a knitted sweater. The OpenKnit Printer uses an open-source platform called Knitic, which allows people to design their own garment that will be ready-to-wear in less than an hour.
Developed by Gerard Rubio, the OpenKnit Printer is part of his final project for university. He has made his schematics available online so that people can created their own OpenKnit Printer for $757. He also reveals, "The possibilities of this technology are awesome. The next milestone, beside improving its reliability, is to develop the ability to create two color patterns. Can't wait for that." Fashion designers better beware.
