Unconventional Timber High Rises

The Wooden Skyscraper Proposal Could Change Stockholm's Skyline

— June 18, 2013 — Art & Design
Europe is not composed of cities known for their high rises and Stockholm, Sweden, is no exception; but that is not what makes the Wooden Skyscraper proposal so intriguing. It may be a design that could instigate a change in the city's skyline, but it is also one that involves wood, not steel and concrete. Yet since it could be one of the first of its kind, it is only natural that the Wooden Skyscraper would make a statement on more than one level.

Designed by Berg | C.F. Møller Architects, the Wooden Skyscraper is not made entirely out of lumber. Instead, it derives its checker-like facade from the use of a glass exterior. This adds a lightness to its look that is very refreshing. Nevertheless, the Wooden Skyscraper is dominated by wood for natural climate regulation, acoustics and more.
Trend Themes
1. Wooden Skyscrapers - The trend of constructing tall buildings out of wood instead of steel and concrete is gaining traction, creating opportunities for innovative building materials and sustainable design.
2. Sustainable Architecture - The trend towards more sustainably designed and constructed buildings is growing, creating new opportunities for environmentally conscious architects, engineers, and construction professionals.
3. Innovative Building Materials - The trend towards using non-traditional materials in construction, such as cross-laminated timber, is disrupting the building materials industry and creating opportunities for new products and technologies.
Industry Implications
1. Architecture - The architecture industry could leverage the Wooden Skyscraper proposal to create more sustainable and innovative building designs that incorporate wood and other eco-friendly materials.
2. Construction - The construction industry could explore the use of cross-laminated timber and other non-traditional building materials to create more sustainable and cost-effective buildings.
3. Building Materials - The trend towards using innovative and sustainable materials like cross-laminated timber in construction presents opportunities for disruption and innovation in the building materials industry.
