The latest Doug Aitken fountain installation does not provide a constant stream of water, instead it drips water from five faucets at alternating paces to create a musical pattern.
Named Sonic, the fountain features a circular pond at its base that was actually cut out of the art gallery floor, making its presence feel permanent and almost natural. The water is milky white, making it non-reflective but allowing for the ripples with each drop to appear more prominent. The entire room feels like an echo chamber and as people walk through, they get the sensation that they are back inside the womb with a rhythmic breathing and the sound of water echoing all around them.
