Snakeskin Overlaid Portraits

Artists often work tirelessly in order to remove imperfections marring the faces of their subjects, but not Yasuyo Fujibe, who has instead purposefully rendered designs on top of seemingly finished portraits. Intricate snakeskin-like patterns are drawn using vibrantly colored paints to produce a surreal effect. Audiences are essentially treated to two separate artworks that have been compressed into singular and visually stunning pieces. It’s as though Fujibe’s subjects are imagining these ornate designs into existence, leaving viewers unsure whether they should look at the beautiful faces in the portraits or the highly detailed patterns.

Also worth mentioning is Yasuyo Fujibe’s stylized interpretations of human beings. Semblances of a realist approach are still there, but Fujibe chooses to hyperbolize various features, like the eyes and jawline, in order to create angelic-looking beings.
