Addressing the issue of waste, both in terms of sewage and plastic, this Ryan Smith keynote discusses the science behind breaking down sewage in order to make bioplastic.
Within sewage is an abundance of different proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, fats and simple sugars. The problem for breaking all that down is that no one microbe can break down all of those components. What Micromidas has done is aggregated a library of different microbes that can make bioplastic but can each feed on a particular component of sewage.
The bioplastic produced has the same texture as basic polyester but is made of a chemical formula that is able to be broken down by the enzymes produced by bacteria. Smith concludes his presentation by saying that shifting the burden onto ourselves by using less may buy us time, but people need to demand better solutions rather than accepting false ones.
