In this Chris Chabris speech the speaker talks about the tendency for the human mind to assume that it understands the surrounding environment and events more than it really does. Chabris, one of the creators of the "gorilla-experiment" demonstrates the potential for the brain to have what he refers to as "illusions of attention," -- when the mind fails to recognize a significant change in the environment because the bulk of a person's focus was directed towards something predictable, assumed or expectant.
This phenomenon applies to modern behavioral patterns where people claim to know what they are doing more than they really do. A prime example is talking on a cell phone while driving. Most people are confident that they are aware of the road ahead of them while in truth, many important changes could happen which the mind will not interpret because it is predisposed with the phone conversation.
