In this Rinku Sen keynote the president and executive director of the Applied Research Center talks about her struggle with cultural identity while growing up and of the need to embrace multiracial communities.
As a child Rinku Sen wanted nothing more than to be an American. She associated that image with hotdogs, baseball games and the Brady Bunch, until there was an incident at her school when a young black man was beaten up by two white football players. After going to a rally for racial justice Rinku Sen said "it was the first time I really felt like I belonged." This epiphany came from the discovery that America isn't about upholding the stereotypical representation of a nuclear family, but rather it is about people from all over coming together to determine what the problems are and fighting for the solutions to those problems.
Ending her keynote, Rinku says that "racial justice is at the core of a compassionate, inclusive and effective society."
