Future climate pattern projection is discussed in this Kim Cobb keynote speech.
Rather than focusing on the examination of average global temperatures over the years, the climate scientist instead looks to trends in precipitation to garner insight into what to expect in terms of weather in the future. She explains that understanding rainfall patterns is important for the prediction of mass climate-affected migration and agricultural sustainability.
Since rainfall statistics only go back as far as 1979, the scientist says that it is important to fill in the gaps that exist in the data so as to use the patterns from the past to make informed decisions on public policy initiatives for the future.
Approximately 70 per cent of the population lives within regions where there is no accurate watershed data and to make effective change in the future, the speaker expresses the need for filling in this missing data.
