The Syracuse Greek Theatre Will be Home to Three Different Plays

Every year, the Syracuse Greek Theatre, a historical landmark in Italy that dates back to the 5th century BCE, hosts three classic plays. To ring in the new theatrical season, the company commissions a design firm to create a temporary stage. This time around, Rotterdam, Netherlands-based OMA, headed by Rem Koolhaas, was tapped to design the set.
Made out of aluminum scaffolding clad with multilayer marine plywood, the Syracuse Greek Theatre stage takes on the shape of two sprawling discs. Created in three parts, it is made up of the Ring, which reimagines the orchestra space as a modern thymele, the Machine, which is a suspended walkway, and the Raft, the backdrop that can be altered for each production.
