In an engaging and eye-opening Serena Koenig keynote the inequalities the exist in medicine and the unequal access to treatment across the world is reviewed through the telling of first-hand accounts that document the problem.
Improving medical treatment for the people of Haiti is the mission statement of the speaker's organization Partners in Health. Her experience as a physician has given her access to some of the least effective hospitals in the world and as such, she has experienced the way that diseases which are easily treatable in North America are often fatal in the developing world.
Rather than focusing on budgetary constraints or bureaucratic red-tape, the speaker urges people to focus on the people who need to be treated for illness and have no means to do so effectively.
By imploring the mantra 'equal lives deserve equal treatment,' the speaker suggests enacting experimental initiatives to those in need and striving for equity in healthcare.
