Facebook Acquires Gowalla

As if knowing your friends' every outfit wasn't enough, Facebook has acquired Gowalla, a company that specializes in tracking and sharing the location of its users. It appears the main use of this acquisition, apart from increasing talented personnel, was for Facebook's development of 'Facebook Timeline.' The approach to 'Timeline' was to provide a more comprehensive and historical environment in which friends could surf one another's profiles and having Gowalla's expertise eased the process.
Gowalla Passport was the company's way of allowing consumers to document the memories of various locations they would visit through multiple sources including photographs and text. Facebook aims to spark further innovation in its future endeavors with the help of Gowalla's memory-based beliefs.
Timeline is an excellent example of a turn taken by Facebook to further connections shared between users making the merging of forces with Gowalla foreshadow much more to come.
