Alexey Titarenko, within his collection “City of Shadows”, has taken it upon himself to capture insanity and confusion in these exquisite photographs. Titarenko who holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Department of Cinematic and Photographic art began his photographic career in 1970 and became a member of well-known photographic club Zerkalo, uses his photographs to “paint a bitter picture of Russia (seen through the lens of St. Petersburg). His represents human beings in the “darkest of times” at the collapse of Soviet Union. In order to capture the insanity and confusion of that time Titarenko portrays humans beings as mere inanimate shadows and blurs. These chilling photographs invite us to explore a world and a history, most unrecognizable.
