'Twacked: When Good Twitter Accounts Go Bad' Sets the Record Straight

— September 29, 2011 — Art & Design
As the social media site Twitter continues to become widely accepted as a trustworthy news resource, the danger of accounts being hacked to spread false info also rises, and the 'Twacked: When Good Twitter Accounts Go Bad' infographic sheds light on this issue.

If you're one of the many people who once used the simple "123456" password to avoid forgetting, you may have noticed the need to switch to something more challenging after Twitter banned it (and 400 others) as a password in July 2011. Another interesting tidbit of info that the illustrated graph has to offer is that certain celebrities continue to be a target of hackers, like Lady Gaga (who currently has over 13 million followers), while others, like Taylor Swift (who has just over 8 million followers) are yet to have their accounts broken into.

When it comes to the online world, there's no such thing as too much security. To avoid a "#Weinergate" incident of your own, check out the 'Twacked' infographic for some helpful tips and info.
Trend Themes
1. Twitter Security - Opportunity for companies to develop new, more secure methods of protecting social media accounts from being hacked.
2. Celebrities Online - Celebrities are targets for hackers and can benefit from increased security measures, such as two-factor authentication or password managers.
3. Fake News - There is a growing need for strategies to prevent the spread of false information on social media as misinformation can be easily spread through hacked accounts.
Industry Implications
1. Cybersecurity - A rise in hacked social media accounts creates an opportunity for the cybersecurity industry to develop new security measures for social media sites.
2. Social Media - As social media continues to be a popular source of information, there is an opportunity for social media companies to develop better security features to prevent hacking and the spread of misinformation.
3. Celebrity Management - Due to the targeted nature of celebrity account hacking, an industry focused on developing specialized online security measures for celebrities could prove to be a lucrative business opportunity.
