Tarot card reading has already been done to death in the English language media. In a culture in which the Tarot is commonly presented only as a divinatory art, to actually play a card game with Tarot cards is surely a superior act of non-conformity. That so-called "Origins of Tarot" video from YouTube is so loaded with myths and pseudo-history that its own creator has admitted that it is not to be taken literally. In fact, according to playing card historians such as John Mcleod of pagat.com and David Parlett, the original purpose of Tarot cards is to play a trick taking card game similar to Bridge or Spades. It is also true that many people especially in continental Europe play card games with a Tarot deck. In France, the Tarot game is so well established, there is an official federation which governs Tarot tournaments. What's most pertinent for countries such as the US is that there are small groups of people forming Tarot game playing clubs here in the US and in other countries. There are also a few online specialty stores based in such states Ohio and Indiana selling specially made Tarot cards for game playing. The growing interest in Tarot game playing amongst non-Europeans is indeed a trend worthy of mention on this website. Comment by Jim Wickson |
