Romina S. Cortellucci — July 12, 2012 — Keynote Trends
References: vimeo
In this Visual Design Keynote, graphic design legend Steven Heller shows how strong visual brands are not always a positive thing. Heller discusses how imagery was used in the 20th century to help create totalitarian regimes. The examples of Mao, Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini show how branding was used to consolidate power.
The ability for these leaders to create cults for themselves through a visual history through propaganda techniques that are used for brands today. Heller discusses how Benito Mussolini placed his face everywhere while Stalin airbrushed himself in photographs with Lenin to cement his qualifications. Other techniques included the creation of the icon, a symbol that represented each of the parties.
Heller drives the idea that the image carries immense power, displaying to graphic designers the affect that they do have and how generations can become absorbed within a brand.
