Our position in the social world -- as well as ordinary everyday interactions with others -- are the contributing factors causing the condition Alain calls status anxiety. Status anxiety is becoming increasingly more apparent in individuals today. Alain attributes this to the fact that people are obsessed with how they are perceived and judged by others. More and more people are attributing their value and self worth based on what other people think of them.

Alain de Botton makes a great argument during his psychology speech when he points out that we live in a society where people constantly use career snobbery as a method of judging and defining others.
