Stanley McChrystal's leadership keynote presentation shares his experiences from the military and how these times positively changed his life. He starts off his talk by sharing stories of the military and of being in combat, and how outcomes in those events turned him into a great leader. He says one of the most important lessons he learned was that, as he says, "leaders can let you fail, yet not let you be a failure."
You must have confidence and trust in leaders in order for them to inspire and lift you up out of tough situations. McChrystal says that instead of leaders giving orders, leaders must instead work towards building a consensus and a sense of shared purpose. He also talks about how generational challenges, made him more transparent, more willing to listen and more willing to be mentored from people below his status. Ultimately, these things made him a better and more adaptable leader.
This is an inspirational speech that highlights important issues around leadership and how to deal with tough situations.
