In his Inventing the Future keynote Eric Haseltine discusses the antecedents that precede any scientific breakthrough and the future for those antecedents.
Necessary for scientific breakthroughs is the invention of new instruments. New technology allows people to see and interact with the world in a way that was previously impossible. This leads to fringe theories, ideas that depart significantly from commonly held beliefs. While many fringe theories may appear to be radical, one or two of them turn out to be true. Haseltine also advocates for idea convergence. In order to develop new approaches it is imperative for ideas from various studies and professions to come together and form something entirely new and unique.
People often say that we study history so that it does not repeat itself, Haseltine argues the opposite and says "study history so that you will repeat it, so that you will become the next Einstein, Newton or Madame Currie."
