In this humanity keynote by Daniel Wong, he explores the difference between hopeful idealism and the hard actuality of realism in our modern world.
Wong explains that the principles behind idealism allows us as a community to be hopeful and optimistic toward worldwide problems such as famine or poverty. And while having hope and a positive attitude toward solving problems is a great way to effect change, those idealistic solutions do not always pan out in reality. Instead, Wong believes in a concept called 'Realistic Idealism,' which incorporates aspects from both terminologies to essentially reflect our humanity.
Realistic Idealism is about seeing people not as projects or problems, but as individual human beings. Wong explains how people shouldn't be defined by their financial or environmental circumstances, and that the only way to successfully help those in need around the world is by understanding who they are first.
