Dan Ariely is a behavioral economist at MIT and author of the books ‘Predictably Irrational’ and ‘The Upside of Irrationality.’ After becoming badly burned in an accident, Ariely became extremely intrigued by irrationality.
Ariely applies his inquisitive mind to the irrational behaviors found in online dating communities. He argues that as you learn more about someone, the less you will like them. With online dating especially, people will fill in the blanks of unknown information with optimism, an effect common across online media.
According to Ariely, as you get to know a person more and more, the less you can fill in these blanks about their personality the way you wish, often leading to disappointment.
