Colin Powell delivers a child education keynote that emphasizes the importance of early education practices and strong structural environments for children.
Powell is best known for holding the position of U.S. Secretary of State from 2001-2005 and is a retired four star general. Drawing on his military background, he explains the process the army employs to instill structure in its young recruits. After 18 weeks, Powell says the young men and women have an understanding of structure and come to respect that discipline. He cites this as a skill they acquire and says it is something that is important to teach children very early in life.
Without structure, Powell fears for many of today’s youth. He says the gift of a good start is the most important thing a young person can be given.
