Although this trend has a relatively small following in the US, as of today, the interest in this subculture is getting more coverage and print as an up and coming piece of the underground culture network.…

Cyber culture is on its way since the 80s. Although, we must recognize that the "urban tribe" connected to it is evolving costantly. In the beginning, it was just cyberpunk. Now that is just a feature of the current subculture, which has absorbed hard-dance as its main soundtrack, gothic extravaganza, a hint of technogaianism opposed to traditional dystopia, and so on. I believe that these years are a key point in the evolution process of the subculture. There are two huge processes that must be managed: balance and autonomy. By balance, I mean that this urban tribe must keep strong roots about its "high" identity (cyberpunk literature, meditation about posthuman condition, etc) WHILE conquering clubs and having fun with creative fashion. It was once too focused on the "serious" stuff to be a true urban tribe, fitting to young ppl needs. But we must avoid it becoming a stupid trend, where just clothes matter. Second point is autonomy. The cyber culture is so wide and interesting that it really doesn't need much influence from outer subcultures. Right now in most of countries the cyber scene is not independent. It's considered a branch of the goth one (see "cybergoths") or an offshoot of the raver one (see "cyberkids"). This view is not evil but still wrong. There is one strong cyber scene, which can intertwine with goth, raver or whatever one. But the subculture is autonomous and has the strength to go forward alone. (that's why I liked the article but not much the video linked - it focuses mainly on the cybergoth side of things). @ lacy: our community is still little, counting on just 207 users. we have "opened" since little more than 1 year, and organized 5 parties so far. you can check out our forum at www.wintermute.it - but it's all in italian :/

:D lovely week for me on TrendHunter... first, Melbourne Shuffle highlight, and now even better, a focus on the cyber subculture! wow :) I am totally into this scene, which is even smaller in Italy than in US. so, me and a friend started a community dedicated to push the cyber universe into our clubs and streets. every report like this makes me happy. this one particularly good, because it admits some gothic roots in the scene, but clearly states that the cyber subculture is autonomous. great job!

The Melbourne shuffle is the new moonwalk. A dance that emerged during the 'acid house' or 'rave' era, the shuffle involves fast moving feet that seem to defy physics. The Melbourne shuffle dance style…

:) you welcome, thanks for posting this entry there's a load of good videos on YouTube, and some specific websites as well. the shuffle isn't black magic as it might seem, with some practice you can master the basics. and again, just time and time and "feeling the vibe" can make of you a great shuffler. it's nice to see it's not just an elitist competition though, in Australia main plazas are filled with young people (also more than 30 at time) finally not doing anything illegal, but just having fun in the sun. btw, they are trying to ban the shuffle from public places though... but I guess it's impossible. and stupid ;)

thaaat's it! I'm pleased TrendHunter finally finds out about this exciting subculture! the whole candyraver and cyber scene is growing fast across the globe, and eventually we have again a true subculture, not just a passing trend, inflated by the media. this stuff is around since more than 10 years, without ANY media support, and still it survives and grows. time for some spotlight, right? ;)
