Jazz Artist Rene Marie shocked her audience when she sung the words to the ‘Black National Anthem’ to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner. Just on time for July 4th! The singer was in front of… |
I do not believe that she should apologize. For years, I have wished the words to the national anthem could be changed. My reason is that it is too much about war and I am about peace. I hated singing that anthem in school (not to mention how difficult the tune is.) It is not titled "The Black National Anthem". Someone just decided to nick name it that. It has all the words necessary for giving strength to those who are war-weary, like me. The battle to overcome racism is still raging, but the fights seem to me to be less painful in the past decade. Equality can happen, maybe sooner than they think. I am white and I tell you this only because I am sure someone has already identified me as black, based upon my opinions. I think she sang it beautifully, too! But, it won't make me vote for Obama. That won't happen, since I truly feel he does not have the necessary experience to deal with the problems this country is facing. If they want racism to end, the best place to start is at the voting booth, by voting as color blind, and only for those who can really do the job. I read an article about 93 year old "Sweetie Pie" who will vote for Obama, merely because she never thought she would see the day that she could vote for a black president. At her age, I would think she would teach her children and theirs the right way to vote for president. When people like her have finally ended their racist tirade, then we may rid ourselves of racism. In the mean time, I see nothing wrong with the words this lady sang. I only have one complaint. She said it was taking artistic expression, but no, it is purely political expression. At a time when we need to eliminate race from the process, this disappoints me. Camille Ramlow on Jul 3, 7:33 PM
